Happy Birthday America! I thought it would be fitting on the Fourth of July to make a list of the top 25 things that make the Red White and Blue an amazing place to call home. I saw something like this in a magazine recently (I think Marie Claire?), so I stole some of them. Here goes...
1. No matter what kind of vacation you want to take or place you want to visit, the good old U.S. of A. has it. Tropical paradise? Winter wonderland? Whimsical forest with the largest trees in the world? Cozy little fishing town? Big city hustle and bustle? Stunning mountainscape? We've got it all. No passport required.
2. Drive through everything-- not just fat (oops, I mean fast) food. Coffee, bear, sushi, weddings...pull around to the next window please!
3. The freedom to choose your place of worship and worship freely with out fear of any danger to you or your family. So often we take this for granted.
4. Regardless of whether or not you voted for her husband, our first lady has some serious style. Lookin' good Michelle.
5. Krispy Kreme doughnuts- sure France has amazing pastries, Belgium has decadent chocolate, and Italy's gelato is a little scoop of Heaven- but in the category of sweet goodness, a warm doughy, melt-in-your mouth Krispy Kreme can hang with the big dogs- in all 27 flavors.
6. Everyday people who turn into humble heroes. Perfect example: Jimmy Stewart who landed a plane in the Hudson River.
7. Target. Enough said.
8. Jone's Pure Cane Soda. No HFC, most have no caffeine, all will make you feel like doing something spontaneous and reminiscent of your childhood. You might find yourself running through a sprinkler.
9. Superfans. Terrible Towels, Cheeseheads, foam fingers. Don't mess with a superfans.
10. Websites like LOL Cats, Engrish.com, and Sporcle.
11. Odd but hilarious products and their accompanying commercials like Snuggie.
12. iPhones.
13. The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis, Gone with the Wind
14. Icons from Aubry and Marilyn to Julia and Reese.
15. NYC policemen.
16. NYC in general.
15. Paula Dean...gotta love some Paula y'all.
16. Cold beer at a baseball game on a hot summer day.
17. The fact that you can have dark skin, light skin, freckled skin, a big nose, a little nose, be tall, short, fat, skinny, have blue eyes, brown eyes, red hair, black hair, purple hair, or pink hair and still look 100% American.
18. Elvis and MJ.
19. Starbucks coffee on every corner.
20. Tomato pie.
21. Back to the Future, ET, and the Breakfast Club.
22. The Dixie Chicks (sorry, after all that, I still like them).
23. All of the China Towns and Little Italies in almost every big city.
24. Putt-putt.
25. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and all Americans who weren't and aren't afraid to stand for what is right.
